Speaker: Derek Doel
Topic:
Data Science as a Product Discipline in Agile Software Development: September 25, 2019

Abstract:
The difficulty and time in using data as a competitive advantage is exponentially compounded if the data solutions such as reports and charts are meant to be a part of your SAAS offering. Many useful dashboards, regressions, and intelligence will grow stale if it lives outside of a product feature. To tackle this problem, Derek discusses the process and structure that RainFocus deployed to get agile in their data product development life-cycle.

Bio:
Derek Doel has contributed to the local data science community for over a decade. His leadership in SAAS data product development at RainFocus (a start-up tackling data management and intelligence in the enterprise events industry) has helped grow the company from 10 to 150+ employees in just three years. His work has enabled his company to build a self-serve BI tool, and provide hundreds of out-of-the-box reports, visualizations, and dashboards that are dynamically generated for each user.

Derek has a passion for numbers and solving hard problems, which has led him to fill roles in statistics, performance analytics, and data strategy. His passion also enabled him to receive education in statistical application; first in obtaining a B.S. in Actuarial Science from Southern Utah University, and then completing a Masters in Statistics in Econometrics at the University of Utah.
